The judging panel of Australia’s most celebrated photography accolade, the William and Winifred Bowness prize, has announced Polixeni Papaetrou, Stephanie Valentin, Justine Varga and William Yang are among the finalists. Stills photographer Trent Parke, NGV’s Senior Curator Photography Isobel Crombie and MGA Gallery Director Shaune Lakin selected 42 photographs from over 2000 entries, the largest number in the prize’s history. The winner of the $25 000 prize will be announced at MGA on Thursday 4 October 2012, when the finalist exhibition is opened.

A selection of works by Polixeni Papapetrou and Stephanie Valentin will be included in the 19th edition of the Noorderlicht International Photofestival: Terra Cognita in The Netherlands. This exhibition considers the relationship between man and the natural world, and features a diverse range of photographic genres by more than 100 photographers from all over the world.
STILLS GALLERY: SHANGHAI CONTEMPORARY 2012
SH Contemporary 2012 takes place from September 7th to 9th, with preview on the 6th, in downtown Shanghai, at the extraordinary Shanghai Exhibition Centre. Stills Gallery will exhibit a selection of Stills artists, exposing them and the gallery to a new international market. This will be the 6th edition of the fair and is organised into two main sections, providing visitors with a selection of cutting-edge and emerging art, including video, film, photography and new media.

2112: Imagining the Future

A selection of works by Stephanie Valentin from her Earthbound series will be exhibited at RMIT, Victoria in 2112: Imagining the Future. Tapping into general anxieties about an uncertain future and public concern about the consequences of climate change, 2112 Imagining the Future presents a range of images revealing how contemporary artists imagine the world might look in one hundred years’ time.
STEPHANIE VALENTIN: Winner of the RBS Emerging Artists Employee’s Choice Award 2010
Stephanie Valentin was awarded the RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland) Employee’s Choice award with her work Earthbound, 2009 from the Earthbound series. As the winner Valentin has received an around-the-world airfare. The RBS Emerging Artists Award is a prestigious art award and is the seventh annual exhibition of emerging art presented by RBS. Other artists from Stills that have won the award are Petrina Hicks with her photograph Lambswool in 2008 and Trent Parke with Motel (2006).

Stephanie Valentin is featured in this group exhibition that considers how
contemporary photographers are responding to issues surrounding climate change
and species survival. Two images from Valentin’s 2009 series Earthbound
consider the affect of depleted rainfall for Australia’s semi-arid zones and
our attempts to understand the earth’s natural systems through science.
STEPHANIE VALENTIN: EARTHBOUND
Parliament House, Canberra
Stephanie Valentin's photographs Earthbound and Vapour were selected for the
Parliament House Art Collection and are currently on public display until
mid-February as part of an exhibition showcasing recent acquisitions. These
images are from Earthbound, a series which uses an interplay of still lives
and landscape to explore our uncertain relationship to the earth's natural
systems.

The finalists of the annual William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize
have been announced and include Glenn Sloggett, Polixeni Papapetrou, Rebecca
Shanahan and Stephanie Valentin. The winner of the $20,000 non-acquisitive
prize, which is judged this year by Helen Ennis, Anne Ferran and MGA Director
Shaune Lakin, will be announced on Thursday 26 November.

interdependence of living systems and the way human activity impacts upon its
environment.
