PETRINA HICKS in RIGHT NOW: AUSTRALIAN ARTISTS FOR RESALE ROYALTY

The one hundred Australian artists in this exhibition have come together to demonstrate their support of the Federal resale royalty scheme, in light of the Federal review which has raised concerns that it will be scrapped. Resale royalty was introduced in 2010 to support artists, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, whose work is often sold for very low sums of money and later resold with an enormous increase in value. Petrina Hicks is represented by Rosemary's Baby (2008).

Congratulations to Petrina Hicks, Glenn Sloggett, Justine Varga and Beverley Veasey who have been selected as finalists in the 2014 Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award.

Now in its 14th year, the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award is considered one of the most important annual surveys of contemporary Australian photographic practice.

Petrina Hicks will be represented by her work Venus from the series The Shadows (2013). Glenn Sloggett's The saddest plant in the world has been selected for the award as well as last years joint winner, Justine Varga, for her work Sounding Silence #4 (2014). New work from Beverley Veasey, Summertime, Botany Bay is also included in the finalists.

Alan Condor and Alan Pigott, two Australian businessmen who now reside in Hong Kong, have been collecting art since 2005. Their collection explores and enriches a shared personal aesthetic, and satisfies a growing desire to support contemporary visual artists and their practice in predominantly Australia, Hong Kong and Britain. Petrina Hicks' diptych The Hand that Feeds (2013) is included in this contemporary collection. Hicks will also be guest speaker for a panel discussion to accompany the exhibition on Saturday 25 January @ 2pm, Tweed Regional Gallery.

PETRINA HICKS in NATIONAL ARTISTS' SELF-PORTRAIT PRIZE 2013

Petrina Hicks is one of 39 contemporary artists from across Australia invited to participate in The University of Queensland Art Museum fourth biennial National Artists' Self-Portrait Prize.

The $50,000 prize is one of the most generous in Australia and will focus on the prevalence of the self-image in today's networked age, with the theme for this year's Prize being remix. post. connect. This exhibition acknowledges that identity is unstable, and that one’s sense of self is informed by multiple, often competing, influences. The invited artists adopt various approaches that do not always conform to traditional notions of self portraiture. In each case, the artists have disclosed something about themselves, whether fabricated or ‘real’.

The winner of The University of Queensland National Artists' Self-Portrait Prize 2013 will be announced on 18 October.

Previous winners include Ben Quilty (2007), Julie Rrap (2009) and Domenico de Clario (2011).

Congratulations to Narelle Autio, Pat Brassington, Anne Ferran, Petrina Hicks and Justine Varga who have been selected as finalists in this years Bowness Photography Prize.

Established in 2006 to promote excellence in photography, this annual non-acquisitive prize is amongst Australia's more important and coveted photography awards.

This year’s eminent judging panel, artist Brook Andrew, AGNSW Senior Curator of Photographs, Judy Annear and MGA Gallery Director Shaune Lakin have selected 46 photographs from 562 entrants.

Narelle Autio will be represented by her mysterious and shadowy underwater landscape Untitled #5 from the series Water hole, 2012. Pat Brassington has been selected for her work Shadow Boxer from the series Quill, 2013. Anne Ferran's striking image of performers creating movement and energy using lengths of fabric, Pale-headed flycatcher from Box of Birds, 2013 is included in the finalists. Petrina Hicks is represented by new work Enigma, from The Shadows, 2013 combining her heightened technical skill and elegant composition with unsettling ambiguity; as well as Justine Varga's beautifully minimalist works Moving out #2 / Moving out #4 from the series Moving out, 2012.

Petrina Hicks is announced as guest speaker at the upcoming University of Technology, Sydney Public Lecture Series for Photography and Situated Media.

The PSM Public Lecture Series invites photographic and multimedia artists at the forefront of their practice who have defined photography as a major art form to discuss their work as well as key issues connected with current photographic innovation and practice.

The lecture series includes Jeff Wall (CAN), widely regarded as one of the most inventive and influential artists of the 20th and 21st , as well as local talents Tim Silver, Patrick Pound and Darren Sylvester.

PETRINA HICKS shortlisted GUIRGUIS NEW ART PRIZE 2013

Petrina Hicks' video work The Chrysalis has been shortlisted for the inaugural Guirguis New Art Prize 2013.

The Guirguis New Art Prize is a new national acquisitive $20,000 contemporary art prize initiated and generously supported by local Ballarat surgeon Mr Mark Guirguis. GNAP will present a selection of Australia’s most exciting contemporary artists with works that explore and embrace new ways of artistic expression, utilising existing mediums and new technologies in innovative ways.

Enter The Chrysalis, an extreme slow motion video work filmed on the Phantom high-speed camera at 800 frames per second. The cliché imagery of flowers, so fresh they gleam with dew, is perverted as Hicks’ model lavishly licks a bloom, her perfectly dripping saliva captured in glorious detail and high resolution.

Other shortlisted artists include Ash Keating, David Rosetzky and Darren Sylvester. The winner will be announced on Friday 12 April 2013.

Petrina Hicks' extreme slow motion video work Hippy and the Snake, Gloss was shot on the Phantom camera at 800 frames per second. It is currently screening in Mechanica Visionem, a group show at Atopia in Oslo, Norway. The exhibition features video works which challenge our perceptions of time and the cinematic experience.

Petrina Hicks and Polixeni Papapetrou feature in the QCP's group exhibition South of the Border, which explores the boundaries of photography. Hicks' Beautiful Creatures series brings together the dualities of human and creature with the alluring language of advertising to examine photography's part in the process of seduction and consumption. Through her continuing interest in the role masks play in story telling and in our everyday lives, Papapetrou's The Dreamkeepers examines a different duality, that of youth and old age.

Hick’s work Shenae and Jade will be included in the exhibition What’s in a face? Aspects of portrait photography at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Having won the 2008 ABN AMRO Emerging Artist Award which included a round the world ticket and residency, Petrina Hicks is undertaking a series of artist residencies in Germany and The Netherlands. Hicks is scheduled for a solo exhibition at Stills gallery in 2010 that will feature work she creates during this period in Europe.

Petrina Hicks is a finalist in the $25,000 National Portrait Prize, which will be on display in the newly opened National Portrait Gallery from 20 March 2009. Currently on display by Hicks in the National Portrait Gallery is the commissioned video portrait of Layne Beachley, the world's most successful professional female surfer.
