POLIXENI PAPAPETROU in 'AUSTRALIAN EXOTICA'

16 April – 29 May 2016
Monash Gallery of Art, VIC

This exhibition explores the characterisation of Australia as a land down under, where things are out of the ordinary and colourfully unconventional. For many contemporary artists, this European vision, inherited from European cartographers, is something that needs to be subverted and critiqued. For others, the idea of living in an eccentric environment continues to inspire a distinctively Australian sense of place.

In 1985 Polixeni Papapetrou began photographing fans, mourners and impersonators of Elvis Presley. She encountered many fans each year on the occasion of Elvis’ death (16 August 1977) at the Melbourne General Cemetery. An imposing memorial was erected in the cemetery, attracting the faithful mourners who allowed Papapetrou to record their homage to the American star. Papapetrou’s photograph are neither a tribute nor a direct part of the Elvis cult; but even less are they a send-up of the sincere people who have taken her into their confidence. They are a contemporary exposition of popular culture in its desire for a community of faith, grace and immortality.

POLIXENI PAPAPETROU ‘A PERFORMATIVE PARADOX’

24 May - 14 July 2013
Centre for Contemporary Photography, VIC

This exhibition focuses on the performative in the work of Polixeni Papapetrou, from her early documentary work through to her directorial work with her children since 2002, regarded internationally as some of the most powerful and provocative works in the field of perfomative photography.

Papapetrou's enduring interest is in how the ‘other’ is represented and how the ‘other’ performs in reinforcing our own identity. Her images are informed by her own experience as ‘other’, growing up as a Greek immigrant in a white, Anglo-Saxon, male-dominated culture in Australia in the 1960s and 1970s.

Marilyn Monroe impersonators, Elvis Presley fans, body builders, circus performers and drag queens have all taken their turn in front of Papapetrou’s camera. All of these people are, one way or another, performing identities.

In 2002 Papapetrou turned her focus to the experience of childhood, using her children as the performers in her pictures. There is a challenging confusion between fantasy, mythology, archetype, animism and theatricality present in these works, ranging from the playful to the transgressive, wrangling with the question of identity and stressing the embodied nature of experience.
