MESSAGE STICKS: INDIGENOUS FILM FESTIVAL

Sydney Opera House
6 - 10 May
Works by indigenous photographers Ricky Maynard and the late Michael Riley will be on display at the Sydney Opera House in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of Message Sticks, Indigenous Film Festival. Featured in this exhibition are three of Maynard's Wik Elder portraits from acclaimed series Returning to Places that Name Us, 2000 and a selection from Riley's surreal cloud, 2000 series in which animals and objects float mid-air against a cloudy blue sky.

Brenda L Croft is a featured artist in There Goes the Neighbourhood, an exhibition exploring the effects of gentrification in urban spaces with a particular focus on the immediate surrounding area of Redfern. The exhibition is accompanied by a book and active public program, seeking to engage a broad community in debate and dialogue regarding the politics of space.

NARELLE AUTIO: YARRA'S EDGE BILLBOARD PROJECT

As part of the Mirvac Urban Art Program, Narelle Autio's image Untitled #15 from the Not of This Earth series, has been transformed in scale to appear on a vast billboard within Melbourne's newly developed Docklands. This photograph was originally shot in from the Sydney Harbour Bridge, observing with a bird's eye view people at leisure in the parklands below.

RICKY MAYNARD: PORTRAIT OF A DISTANT LAND

This touring exhibition curated by Keith Munro (curator, MCA), is Ricky Maynard's largest survey exhibition to date and features over 60 photographs spanning twenty years of his artistic practice. Included in the exhibition are the portraits of Wik Elders from his acclaimed series Returning to Places that Name Us, and his most recent and largely unseen series Portrait of a Distant Land.

Ricky Maynard has a solo exhibition at Stills in July.

I THINK I SHALL NEVER SEE A BILLBOARD AS LOVELY AS A TREE

Beverley Veasey's Habitats work features in the 5th billboard exhibition I think I shall never see a billboard as lovely as a tree, as one of 4 large scale photographic works presented within the context of the Hazelhurst Regional Gallery gardens. Habitats, was Veasey's 2008 series, depicting the artificial environments of animal enclosures. Photographed without the inhabitants we are left to gaze at the man made spaces created to replicate the wild.

Congratulations to Polixeni Papapetrou who has been announced as the winner of the 2009 Josephine Ulrick & Win Schubert award for photography. The winning entry was the image Sisters Rocks, from the series Games of Consequence, which was exhibited at Stills gallery, Seoul International Photography Festival, and The National Art Center in Tokyo, Japan during 2008. There will be a chance to meet Papapetrou as part of the Art Gallery Society of NSW My Favourite Things series of artist talks, from 6.30pm, 15 July 2009, at AGNSW.
