WILLIAM AND WINIFRED BOWNESS PHOTOGRAPHY PRIZE

Beverley Veasey, Polixeni Papapetrou, Ella Dreyfus, and Martin Smith have been
selected as finalists to exhibit in the William and Winifred Bowness
Photography Prize, in Monash Gallery of Art, Melbourne. Established in 2006 to
promote excellence in photography the prize presents an overview of
contemporary photomedia works from the past year.

Beverley Veasey exhibits Study of a white Rhinoceros, Cretotherium simum, 2007
in this group show that is exploring the relationship between the dark side of
human nature and our animal instincts. Veasey's work recognizes the decline of
biodiversity due to human impact on natural habitats and reflects upon the way
in which we now interact with animals through artificial environments.

YIN-YANG: CHINA IN AUSTRALIA

William Yang is one of the six contemporary artists with Chinese and
Australian backgrounds exhibiting artwork in this exhibition. Their work will
be exhibited alongside Colonial artefacts and objects, rare wallpaper designs
and works on paper, curated with the aim to communicate the synergy between
these two cultures.
Presented by the National Trust S.H. Ervin Gallery and orchestrated to
coincide with the Beijing Olympics Games, Yin-Yang: China in Australia is an
exhibition examining the important influences of Chinese people on the shaping
of Australian culture, from aspects of the everyday to aesthetics in
architecture and visual arts.

These two William Yang exhibitions coincide to create a fascinating insight
into Yang’s scope as a photographic artist and his personal journey through
China as an exploration of his Chinese heritage.
Yang interlaces his photographic works in Claiming China with hand written
commentaries that infuse the work with subtle wit, touching personal anecdotes
and astute observations.

Glenn Sloggett has been short listed for the New Social Commentary 08 + FJ
Foundation Acquisitive Prize by guest judge Christine Morrow, Curator Museum
of Contemporary Art (Sydney).
The 26 selected works were chosen from the 160 entries for the new and
challenging ways in which they address the state of Australian society,
questioning and reflecting on issues such as social isolation and cultural
identity.
The winner of the $15,000 acquisitive prize will be announced on Saturday 20th
September.

Victorian era. Volich's images make subtle intrusions into the scape that is

preparation for the 2012 Olympics.
